2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa
Earlier this year, sports stadiums around Joburg played host to the Confederation Cup and in June this year, it will become the first African city ever to host both the opening and the closing ceremonies for the Fifa World Cup.
Taking place from the 11th June to the 11th July 2010, the World Cup is expected to attract thousands of football fans from across the world. This tournament will be played at 10 stadiums across the country namely Johannesburg’s Soccer City, Ellis park, and the 40 000-seat Orlando Stadium, earmarked as one of the training venues for the tournament.
Soccer City is shaping up to be a unique venue, designed to look like an African pot being warmed by flames from a pit of fire. The stadium will not only host football matches but rugby matches as well. Because of its strategic location – only 10 kilometres from the city centre and close to two major highways, the Soweto Highway and the N1 Highway.
